Tragic news as two horses suffer fatal injuries at Cranbourne

2021-07-09T09:35+10:00

Two horses have died in the same race at Thursday’s race meeting at Cranbourne.

Both horses suffered fatal injuries in unrelated incidents in race two, with races pushed back as both horses received treatment.

Billie de Lune, trained by Gavin Bedggood, was seen being pulled out of the race at the 650m mark by jockey Brian Higgins, while Showusyamoves, trained by John Rattle, was seen being pulled up past the post.

Both jockeys walked away unscathed.

"Both horses were attended to by the on-course team of veterinarians after sustaining their injuries, but unfortunately neither were able to be saved and were humanely euthanised," an RV statement read.

"Neither of the horses’ jockeys, Brian Higgins (Billie De Lune) or Lewis German (Showusyamoves), suffered any injuries.

"RV extends its condolences to the owners of both Showusyamoves and Billie De Lune, their respective trainers John Rattle and Gavin Bedggood, as well as their stable staff and all who cared for the horses throughout their careers and are greatly saddened by their loss.

"A post-mortem examination will be conducted on both horses, as is standard procedure."
