Around the country: Pie and Tiger pressing for debuts, Blues and Roos team up and more

It was a big week in state leagues around the country, with returns from injury, clubs teaming up and youngsters starring.

Here are our takeaways from your club’s performances in the VFL, WAFL and SANFL.

Young Pie pressing for debut

Jack Ginnivan is banging the door down for a Collingwood debut, kicking four goals in his side’s VFL win over Richmond.

He has now kicked 11 goals in three weeks and done everything possible to earn a call-up.

Brayden Sier led the way with 30 disposals, while Finlay Macrae found 23 disposals and Max Lynch won 40 hit-outs to go with two goals.

Mason Cox booted two and draftee Reef McInnes was also impressive with 18 touches.

Richmond small forward bags five goals

It was a tough weekend for the Tigers, going down in both the AFL and the VFL to Collingwood, but Noah Cumberland was the story.

The 20-year-old kicked five goals from 20 disposals against the Pies and was nearly the difference in the game.

A possible AFL debut awaits.

Josh Caddy dominated, winning 39 disposals while Will Martyn picked up 31.

Samson Ryan also hit the scoreboard, kicking three to go with 20 hit-outs.

Charlie Constable leads the way again

What more does Charlie Constable have to do to get a game for Geelong?

Even with Joel Selwood rested, he was unable to crack into the Cats side and once again starred at VFL level.

He picked up a game-high 30 disposals and laid seven tackles in his side’s win over Williamstown.

Ben Jarvis booted three and Josh Jenkins kicked two, while Jordan Clark picked up 21 and kicked a goal.

Out of favour Bulldogs dominate

Pat Lipinski and Will Hayes were prolific in Footscray’s win over Sydney in the VFL on Sunday.

The pair combined for 71 disposals, while Hayes took 11 marks.

Jordon Sweet meanwhile impressed against experienced ruck Callum Sinclair, winning 31 hit-outs and kicking two goals.

Hayden Crozier feels a cut above the level as well, taking seven marks and picking up 23 disposals.

Swans youngster bags four

Logan McDonald gave John Longmire something to think about by kicking four goals for Sydney in their narrow loss to the Dogs.

The no.4 draft pick hasn’t played at AFL level since Round 13 but certainly put himself back in contention as the Swans march towards September action.

Ryan Clarke amassed 32 touches and had seven tackles and Paddy McCartin had 24 kicks on the way to 27 disposals as he continues to chase a possible AFL contract.

Kanga Blues too good for Hawks

Yes, you read that right. All three teams had a bye in the VFL this weekend and combined for a scratch match at Ikon Park.

Carlton and North Melbourne combined forces given their lengthy injury lists to take on a normal-looking Box Hill Hawks side.

Mitch Lewis made his return from a concussion for the Hawks in what was a good sign.

Carlton small forward Josh Honey kicked three goals, while North’s Will Walker also kicked three.

Jed Anderson was also prolific for the Roos as he continues his return from injury, while Blues draftee Jack Carroll was listed among the best players.

Dees feast in comfortable win over Werribee

Sam Weideman booted three goals for the Demons on the weekend in their dominant win over Werribee.

Jay Lockhart led the way with 24 disposals, while Jake Melksham picked up 22 and kicked a goal.

Majak Daw also impressed in the ruck, winning 34 hit-outs and taking six marks.

VFL listed forward Corey Ellison booted six goals.

Pressure for selection at St Kilda and Essendon

St Kilda will have some tough decisions at the selection table, with impressive performances across the board in the VFL.

Jack Lonie booted five goals and won 22 disposals, Jack Bytel led the way with 37 touches and Josh Battle looked good with 24 disposals.

On the Essendon side of things, Tom Hird booted three goals while Brayden Ham won 36 disposals and kicked two.

Sproule sprouts in solid Giants win

Zach Sproule was the star of the show as GWS defeated Gold Coast by 40 points.

He kicked five goals from 12 disposals and laid five tackles in a strong showing up forward.

Jake Riccardi chimed in with three goals, Matt De Boer also kicked three and had 35 touches while captain Stephen Coniglio stepped up his preparation for a senior return with 36 disposals and eight tackles.

Will Brodie was the Suns’ best with 38 possessions and academy product Joel Jeffrey kicked three majors.

Shark day for Lions

The Brisbane Lions were smashed by Southport to the tune of 109 points.

Tom Joyce had 27 possessions and Jaxon Prior 26 in what was a dismal day for the Lions.

Mitch Johnson kicked five and Connor Nutting three for the Sharks.

Old and new Crows at the forefront

The Crows went down to South Adelaide by 17 points, but teenagers Tariek Newchurch and Brayden Cook were bright spots for the losing side.

Newchurch finished with three goals and Cook added two, the pair combining for five of Adelaide’s 10 majors.

Veteran Tom Lynch played in the SANFL for the second week in a row and stepped up with 28 disposals, seven marks, seven inside 50s and a goal to put himself back into AFL calculations.

Andrew McPherson was also busy with 25 touches while Jackson Hately had 24 possessions and six tackles. Darcy Fogarty returned 2.2 from 19 touches and took nine marks.

Bonner busy as Magpies go down

Following a quiet AFL debut for Port Adelaide in Round 15, Dylan Williams was back playing for the Magpies on the weekend.

He was solid enough in their 36-point loss to Norwood, finishing with two goals from 11 disposals.

Pete Ladhams also kicked a couple while defender Riley Bonner led the way with 30 disposals and 10 rebound 50s while Hamish Hartlett had 17 possessions and a massive 15 tackles.

Dockers and Eagles in action as WAFL returns

WAFL action resumed after a week off with Peel Thunder beating East Fremantle by 26 points.

Of the Dockers listed players, Luke Valente led the way with 20 disposals and three goals, Tobe Watson had 22 touches and 10 marks and Taylin Duman took 11 grabs and had the ball 21 times.

Retired Cat Harry Taylor bagged four for the Sharks in his first WAFL appearance since 2007.

West Coast went down to Swan Districts by two points with Mark Hutchings the standout.

He amassed 30 disposals and kicked three goals, teaming up with Xavier O’Neill who had 24 touches, nine inside 50s and kicked a goal.

Jake Waterman also chimed in with three goals.
