Darwin jockey Brendan Sweeney remains in an induced coma

2021-07-14T11:10+10:00

Jockey Brendan Sweeney remains in an induced coma in Royal Darwin Hospital after a three-horse fall at Darwin’s Fannie Bay racecourse 18 days ago.

Kevin Ring from the Australian Jockeys’ Association said that Sweeney had recently undergone more surgery to aid his breathing while fellow rider Kim Gladwin had been readmitted to hospital for further surgery.

"Brendan Sweeney has had a tracheotomy and they are hoping he can breathe on his own properly and then they will bring him out of the induced coma," Ring said.

"Kim Gladwin has had a bit of a setback. He ended up with some fluid around the heart and had to be operated on yesterday."

Jarrod Todd who was also involved in the fall will ride at Darwin on Wednesday on his first day back at the races.
