Jordan Lewis' left-field All-Australian small forward candidates

2021-07-15T09:03+10:00

Jordan Lewis believes Essendon’s Jake Stringer and Hawthorn’s Luke Breust should be in the All-Australian conversation.

While he feels Toby Greene is the likely lock in the small forward position, the other spot is wide open.

It may end up filled by a key forward or a midfielder when the team is announced, but Lewis believes both deserve kudos for their seasons and has thrown them up as left-field All-Australian candidates.

“I reckon the one lock would be Toby Greene. I think that’s widely accepted. He’s kicked 35 goals for the season and he’s a star,” Lewis told SEN Breakfast.

“The two I’d like to throw up as potential candidates – Jake Stringer. I just think his season at the moment is unbelievable.

“He’s (kicked) 25 goals, he’s the 11th best general forward in the competition.

“The other one I want to throw up is Luke Breust.

“Because Hawthorn haven’t been going so well … his numbers and his performance this year have been unbelievable.

“He’s the number two general forward in the competition. He’s kicked 26 goals for the season, 67 per cent accuracy, but he’s elite in contested possessions and goals per game.

“As a small forward, that’s hard to do. He’s above average in marks inside 50, forward pressure and tackles.”

Breust leads Hawthorn’s goal kicking this year with 26 from 16 games. He sits 21st in the competition for goals kicked, behind small forwards Charlie Cameron, Bayley Fritsch, Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti and Greene.
