Giants not concerned by Kelly’s contract comments

2021-07-16T09:21+10:00

GWS football boss Jason McCartney is “really confident” with where contract talks are placed with star midfielder Josh Kelly.

Kelly can either explore his options as a restricted free agent at the end of the year or sign an eight-year extension to stay with the Giants.

The 26-year-old told reporters on Wednesday that he’s in no rush to make a decision on his future.

“I don't think being down here (in Melbourne) changes anything,” Kelly said.

“There's a number of factors that go into a decision around contracts.

“It's not something I'm investing too much time into at the moment.

“The club and I are really happy with where things are at and we've always said there will be no rush, so everything's all good at the moment.”

McCartney isn’t concerned by Kelly’s comments, saying discussions with his management are in a “really good space”.

“While he’s playing the footy that he’s playing, it’s not concerning me too much at all to be honest,” he told SEN’s Bob and Andy.

“We feel like it sits in a really good space.

“One thing our club spoke about with Josh and his management when we went to Melbourne … that adjustment and everything that’s going on, it’s hard to focus in on that to be honest.

“We’re on the road, we’re away and the task of the competition each week, it’s just a different environment.

“It’ll play out. I feel really confident with where it sits at the moment.

“We’ve got a bit of time to go yet.”

Kelly and his Giants teammates were forced to relocate to Queensland due to COVID concerns in Melbourne.

Their Round 18 match against rivals Sydney will now be played at Metricon Stadium on Sunday night.
