Matildas midfielder not concerned about Olympics preparation

2021-07-17T10:26+10:00

The Matildas lost their final friendly before the Tokyo Olympics 1-0 to Japan on Wednesday, but midfielder Chloe Logarzo said not to be concerned.

"It was just a good chance for us to see a few things, work through some flaws and get us ready for the tournament," she told SEN 1170's Call Time with Katie Brown.

"I think it definitely will make us stronger and it's just another step into the right direction.

"It's still a work in progress but I think we're doing amazing things behind closed doors and we're just getting ourselves ready and geared for the big show.

"I think like all Australians do, we love to be the underdogs."

The loss to Japan follows losses to Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark in the last few months, as well as a scoreless draw with Sweden.

The Matildas open their Olympic campaign this coming Wednesday, against New Zealand at Ajinomoto Stadium.

Logarzo, who is going into her second Olympic Games after representing Australia at Rio 2016, said the level of focus on the task ahead is more intense this time around.

"This Olympics is way more hyper-focused than Rio was," the 26-year-old said.

"With COVID-19, we have to be super aware of everything that's around us and make sure we're keeping each other safe. And we haven't had many games together before the Olympics, so it's made this lead-up period busy making sure we're working on everything to an absolute tee because we just haven't had the time to be able to do it.

"I think it's going to work in our favour. Because we've been so focused, we've had no time to let things slip."

Being part of a team sport, Logarzo said the COVID-19 situation has been more worrying to deal with.

"It's been quite stressful knowing that our team weighs on every single individual person doing their specific thing correctly,” she said.

"And that means not just their role on the field, but also staying safe and being away from COVID. We keep our bubble quite small and we're doing all the correct things.

"Although it might be a bit annoying being in the centre of it, we know we're doing everything possible (to stay safe)."

The Matildas are in Group G for Tokyo 2020, where they will face Sweden and the USA after New Zealand.
