Melbourne Storm break 86-year record after 14th straight win

2021-07-18T12:59+10:00

The Melbourne Storm thrashed Newcastle 48-4 at Cbus Super Stadium on Saturday night to become the 12th team in league history to win 14 consecutive games.

The Storm also broke an 86-year rugby league record, surpassing the Sydney Roosters’ 1935 record for the most points scored after 17 games in one year.

It’s the 11th time Craig Bellamy’s side have scored 40 points this season.

Bellamy singled out praise for Jerome Hughes and Nicho Hynes who both starred in the 44-point mauling of the Knights.

“Hughesy just seems to be able to create something out of nothing,” Bellamy told reporters.

“You don't see anything there but then he goes there and comes out the other side. He's a remarkable player - he's got nous, he's got speed, he's got skill.

“It was a big decision to put him into halfback and he's made a real success of it. With all due respect I wouldn't swap him for anyone, or any halfback in the game.

“As for Nicho, he's just got better and better as the year has gone on.”

The Storm’s 25th consecutive win in Queensland sits them at the top of the NRL ladder after 16 rounds.
