Storm football boss explains why Bellamy is yet to sign on

2021-07-21T12:07+10:00

Melbourne Storm football boss believes Craig Bellamy is all but certain to sign on with the club for next year.

It is believed that Bellamy will sign on as head coach for at least one more year, before shifting into an advisory role with the Storm.

With the decision seeming imminent for some time now, Ponissi was asked if any hurdles had been reached with getting Bellamy’s future locked in.

“I think it’s been the same all season,” Ponissi said on Sportsday.

“We know what the decision will be, we’re all going to be very happy.

“There’s a few things that need to be ironed out so I’m sure when Craig’s ready he’ll finally put pen to paper and decide.

“But you know like in any negotiations it’s been a distracting season with all of our relocations and all of that.

“I’m sure it’ll get sorted out in the near future.”

Ponissi believes the main reason for any delay is due to Bellamy’s single-minded focus on the next challenge at hand.

“Anyone who knows Craig, he’s just so focused week to week and he just worries about the game,” Ponissi said.

“Basically, anything that gets in his way in terms of preparing – through his video work and his planning – just takes secondary.

“He just does and things like his own future, that can wait, whether that’s a week or another two weeks then so be it.

“He’s just the most focused human being I’ve ever met and week to week he hasn’t given it the time he needs to.

“It’s getting very close I just think it’s more just making time I think then any fine details.

“He just needs to find the time to get it done.”

Bellamy will look to lead the Storm to their 15th straight win when they face the Cowboys in Townsville on Friday night.
