NRL crystal ball: Predicting the storylines ahead of Round 19

2021-07-22T15:25+10:00

With Round 19 of the NRL season kicking off on Thursday night, SEN’s Matt White and Tom Costigan have predicted what the headlines will read once all four games are complete.

Interesting stories are bound to pop up over the weekend, but time will tell if the below headlines read true come Monday.

Billy the Kid gives Robbo a huge grin

Reason: “Billy Smith has been named at centre to replace 300-game veteran Josh Morris,” Costigan said on SEN 1170 Mornings.

“Smith debuted in 2019, but didn’t play at all last year because of an ACL injury and a shoulder reco at the start of this year.

"He’s played four games, scored four tries, and had three wins in those four games.

“I think he’s been really, really good for Roosters since he returned against the Bulldogs.

“I’ve been really impressed with him, I think he’s going to score a try.”

Paps is back, tell your friends

Reason: “Ryan Papenhuyzen is making his return for the Storm this weekend off the bench.

“They’re paying about $1.03, they’re Winx odds against the Cowboys.

“He’s not going to start, but I think he’ll play 20 to 25 minutes and he’s going to look great.

“I think he’ll be electric, it’s his first game back in nine or ten weeks.

“He’s going to come back and score a try as well.”

Mild, Mild, Mess

Reason: “The Wests Tigers’ ‘Wild Wests’ documentary aired on Monday night.

“They’re playing the Manly Sea Eagles this Friday night, and I don’t think they have a chance to win.

“Turbo (Tom Trbojevic) is back, Daly Cherry-Evans is back, I think it’s going to be a smashing.

“I’m going for the Tigers to capitulate against the Sea Eagles.

“It’s going to be a mess.”
