Is this the “last roll of the dice” for Crows tall?

2021-07-23T11:34+10:00

Adelaide tall Billy Frampton has earned a senior recall after a dominant display in the SANFL last weekend.

Frampton, who has been shifted into defence this season, took 13 marks and gathered a team-high 31 disposals, resulting in a call-up for the Crows’ match against Hawthorn on Saturday night.

Contracted until the end of 2022, the 24-year-old has been in and out of Adelaide’s side and is yet to nail down a permanent spot since arriving from rivals Port Adelaide at the end of 2018.

Power champion Kane Cornes says this could be the “last roll of the dice” for Frampton to prove himself at AFL level.

“How many chances has Billy Frampton had? He’s had more chances at AFL level than most,” Cornes told SEN SA Breakfast.

“I want to be respectful to Billy, but when are we going to understand that at SANFL level he’s an outstanding footballer, when he goes to the next level, he’s not good enough.

“We saw it at Port Adelaide, we’ve seen it over two or three years at the Crows. It’s just the way it is.

“I would think this is the last roll of the dice.”

Cornes also has concerns over the development of young Adelaide defender Fischer McAsey, who is yet to play a senior game in 2021.

McAsey, selected with pick No.6 in the 2019 National Draft, hasn’t been able to add to the 10 games he played in his debut season at West Lakes.

“I’m surprised and disappointed we’re not seeing McAsey,” Cornes said.

“If I’m going to pick someone to play in defence, I’m going to go with the future. That’s someone who you’ve picked in the top 10 in the draft.

“McAsey must be miles off it if he can’t get a game this year, which is somewhat of a concern with Adelaide’s recruiting issues that they’ve had.”

The 20-year-old signed a two-year contract extension in April.
