Saints legend “saddened” by club’s premiership drought

2021-07-25T13:42+10:00

St Kilda legend Ross Smith says he is “saddened” by his former club’s long premiership drought.

Ross, one of the Saints’ most decorated players, played in the club’s last flag in 1966 before adding a Brownlow Medal and Trevor Barker Award the following year.

“We’re saddened by that fact (flag drought),” the ex-Saints captain told This Is Your Sporting Life thanks to Tobin Brothers Funerals

“I think the club are doing a pretty good job to rectify it.

“I guess at all stages they’ve been trying to rectify it and trying to find the combination of players that are going to get that other premiership.”

The Saints have been largely inconsistent in 2021 after making a surprise finals appearance last year.

“It’s a very difficult job. I don’t like the style of game that’s been played, but I admire the players and their skills and levels of fitness,” Ross said.

“I think St Kilda are on the right track at the moment to try and find the combination that will get them into finals and then ultimately to win the premiership.”

Ross was inducted into St Kilda’s Hall of Fame in 2003 and was selected in the club’s Team of the Century.
