Star Pie won't re-sign before new coach is named

2021-07-28T11:01+10:00

BRAYDEN Maynard is committed to the final year of his contract at Collingwood, but won’t sign a new deal until a coach is named.

Maynard, 24, has been the subject of trade speculation for much of the year and recent reports categorically stated he would join Melbourne in the off-season.

Rival clubs looking to pick-off the Pies’ talent have sensed blood in the water given the upheaval at Collingwood.

But Maynard wants to stay at the Pies, where his current deal runs until the end of 2022.

Collingwood have looked to initiate discussion on a new contract for the rugged defender, but Maynard would prefer to develop a relationship with the new coach before turning his mind to an extension beyond next season.

Maynard is one of a handful of “pre-agents” at Collingwood as a player who reaches free agency status in a little over 12 months’ time.

The pre-agency phase has often acted as a trigger for players looking for lucrative new deals or clubs looking for a better trade return than free agency compensation would provide.
