Bogut comments on Cambage’s alleged behaviour in Opals scrimmage

2021-07-29T17:29+10:00

Australian basketball champion Andrew Bogut says Liz Cambage’s alleged behaviour should not be excused because of her mental health struggles.

Cambage, 29, is under investigation by Basketball Australia for a “breach of the integrity framework and code of conduct” following an incident in an Opals scrimmage against Nigeria prior to the Tokyo Olympics.

The Opals star later withdrew from the Games due to mental health reasons.

Joel Caine asked Bogut on 1170 SEN Drive: “From what you’re hearing without saying exactly what you heard or what’s doing the grapevine – is it a racial thing? Is it a derogatory thing?

"Enough is enough": Opals great doesn't want to see Cambage in green and gold again.

Bogut replied: “All of the above. From what I’ve heard it’s all of the above.

“It’s not good. It’s not words that you want to utter and that’s why they can’t be repeated on radio.

“It’s just not good. There are words that are sometimes said in the heat of battle – and they are definitely not on that list.

“They should not be excused – mental health or not.”

Cambage, a four-time WNBA All-Star, also reportedly broke team COVID-19 protocols to go out in Las Vegas, a claim she has strongly denied.

The Opals lost to Belgium 85-70 in their opening game at the Tokyo Olympics. They next face China on Friday night (AEST).
