SHE'S DONE IT! Jess Fox finally secures historic gold medal

2021-07-29T19:34+10:00

Jess Fox is finally an Olympic champion, winning canoe slalom gold in one of the feel-good story of the Games.

Nine years after winning silver in London and five years after heartbreak in Rio, Fox finally has the medal she’s longed craved.

Just two days after falling agonisingly short in the K1 event, she backed up her bronze medal effort by winning gold in C1 – the first time the event has been held at an Olympics.

Qualifying fastest in the semi-finals, Fox knew she had Britain’s Mallory Franklin earlier run to beat to claim gold.

While four penalty seconds after hitting two gates in the K1 cost Fox on Wednesday, she was flawless on Thursday afternoon to record a time of 105.04s, 3.64 ahead of Franklin and 6.09 ahead of Germany’s Andrea Herzog.

Fox’s gold medal is one of the great moments in recent Australian Olympic history.
