Leppitsch reacts to "very odd" Clarkson Hawthorn exit

2021-07-31T18:08+10:00

Justin Leppitsch found Friday's announcement that Alastair Clarkson would be departing Hawthorn at season’s end and how it unravelled “very odd”.

It was confirmed that Clarkson and the Hawks would part ways, just over 12 months prior to his expected departure date.

“It’s very odd isn’t it,” Leppitsch answered when asked how he took in yesterday’s events on SEN's Crunch Time.

“Anyone who’s been in club land listened to Clarko (Alastair Clarkson) and wanted to believe all of that and what was going to go on, but you also know you’ve got different people with different agendas at a footy club and that’s just the reality of it.

“It seems that the only three or four people who don’t like Clarko wear brown and gold somewhere in the Hawthorn hierarchy, because we all think that he’s fantastic and a terrific coach and still got some energy to do the job.

“So it’s odd, it is a little bit odd … the bit I probably look at is did they treat him well enough as a person?"

For “a man who will probably have a statue” at Hawthorn, Leppitsch was left unimpressed and unconvinced with the treatment of the four-time premiership coach.

“He probably deserves a bit more than that,” he said.
