Report: NRL "strongly considering" MCG as potential Grand Final venue

2021-08-01T17:03+10:00

The NRL is reportedly considering hosting the NRL Grand Final at the MCG.

With Sydney under strict COVID lockdown until at least August 28, it’s looking increasingly unlikely that ANZ Stadium won’t be able to host the big game.

Whie Brisbane has long been considered the frontrunner to host the Grand Final if Sydney is unable to, The Daily Telegraph believes the NRL is “strongly considering” the MCG.

The report says the competition is giving serious thought to Melbourne as a result of the Storm’s success and the lure of hosting a bumper crowd.

Pending COVID restrictions, it’s believed that the MCG could host up to 80,000 patrons, double that of Suncorp Stadium’s 40,000 capacity.

Additionally, The Telegraph believe ARL Chairman Peter V’Landys is keen to repay the loyalty of the Victorian Government after they lost Origin I as COVID cases surged at the time.

The NRL Grand Final is currently scheduled for October 3, over a week later than the AFL Grand Final’s September 25 date.
