"Exactly the type": The star unrestricted free agents perfect for Gold Coast

2021-08-03T07:51+10:00

It may be hypothetical, but Garry Lyon and Tim Watson feel unrestricted free agents Luke Parker and Cam Guthrie are the perfect players to help correct the course of Gold Coast.

The Suns are yet to play finals in their history and continue to languish in the bottom third of the ladder with a young list.

The Sydney and Geelong stars are out of contract and likely locks to remain with their clubs, but Garry Lyon believes, in a perfect world, they are exactly what Gold Coast is missing from a leadership and cultural perspective.

“Whenever you’re talking about the Gold Coast Suns and what they can do, and I know it can be fairy land, but this is exactly what needs to be done,” Lyon told SEN Breakfast.

“Cam Gurthie, Luke Parker, two others, take them up there and embed them in that place.

“They have reportedly invested most of their money in their young talent and they have to, or they can’t keep them.

“Parker will stay at Sydney I’m sure because that’s what Sydney do, but if it’s a money thing and just say hypothetically they can’t resolve it, Gold Coast needs the ability to go bang and get him in there.”

Tim Watson agrees, saying their experiences in the vaunted Geelong and Sydney systems, as well as their on-field talents, make them the perfect players to inject into the Suns program.

“They’re exactly the type of soldiers that they need up there. Exactly the type,” Watson said.

“The pedigree of those players, where they come from, the type of organisation they’ve been associated with, the type of team they’ve been associated with, the type of coaching they’ve had.

“It ticks all of those boxes for them.”

Guthrie will play his 200th game for Geelong this weekend, while Sydney co-captain Parker has played 231 for his side.
