Bring on Team USA: Boomers thump Argentina, one win from elusive medal

2021-08-03T23:40+10:00

Bring on Team USA.

The Boomers have annihilated Argentina 97-59 to cement their spot in the final four of the Olympic Games.

After trailing at the first break, Australia put the clamps on Argentina, restricting them to just 11 points in the 2nd quarter, 15 in the third and stunningly just four points in the final quarter before the starters were pulled out of the game.

The 38-point win was the most complete and impressive performance of the tournament from the Aussies, who were near-perfect after half-time.

It was an incredibly even effort by the team, Patty Mills top scoring with 18 (three of four from three), while Joe Ingles, Nick Kay, Jock Landale and Matisse Thybulle all finished in double digits.

Dante Exum’s explosiveness, Nathan Sobey and Chris Goulding’s offence off the bench and Matthew Dellavedova’s typical defence were all also worth noting.

The loss for Argentina brings about the end of five-time Olympian Luis Scola’s storied career. He received a standing ovation as he came from the court late in the fourth and was visibly emotional on the bench.

The Boomers face the odds-on gold medal favourites on Thursday afternoon, with a spot in the final at stake.

A loss would mean a shot at bronze against either France or Slovenia.
