Dagg comments on “touchy subject” surrounding Erasmus hearing

South African Director of Rugby Rassie Erasmus will face an independent misconduct hearing following comments he made about the match official performance during the South Africa and British & Irish Lions test series.

The investigation comes after Erasmus posted a 60-minute video on social media “absolutely slamming” the first performance of the match officials in their 22-17 Lions loss.

SEN’s Israel Dagg, who as a former player was subject to criticism, views the situation as a "touchy subject”.

“So basically what I’m getting out of that is that we’re not allowed to slam the refs, which is quite a touchy subject,” Dagg said on SENZ Breakfast.

“We get criticised when we play rugby and we play a terrible game... and we just have to take it.

“So for a ref (referee), when they make a mistake, they need to be reviewed as well. They need to have people reviewing their performances, but in saying that I totally agree with the top… we need refs in the game.

“There has to be a middle ground, whatever that is … but it’s not a good look for the head coach coming out for an hour-long video and slamming them.

“Reality is we can’t take back that decision so what’s slagging them, what’s that going to do with that decision?

“So it’s a touchy subject because they need to be reviewed as well. As players if we play a bad game we get thrown under the bus, if we play a good game we get spoken about well.

“It’s a tough one.”

Erasmus will need to put the investigation to the back of his mind as he looks to lead the Springboks to a series win on Saturday, with the three-match series currently levelled at 1-1.
