Beach volleyball silver, boxing bronze, more canoe sprint success

2021-08-06T16:25+10:00

Australia's women's beach volleyball pair of Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy are taking home a silver medal, after losing the final to the USA in straight sets, 21-15 21-16.

The American pair of April Ross and Alix Klineman were strong from the start, while the Aussies struggled with their own errors, including missed serves at the end of both sets.

The silver medal was still a great result, being Australia’s first podium finish in the sport since Kerri Pottharst and Natalie Cook won gold at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

The USA’s gold medal, meanwhile, completes April Ross’ medal trifecta - adding to her silver from London 2012 and bronze from Rio 2016.

Switzerland won the bronze medal, defeating Latvia 2-0 to take home their country’s first ever medal in women’s beach volleyball.

BOXING: BRONZE FOR GARSIDE

Harry Garside has won Australia’s first Olympic boxing medal in 33 years, collecting bronze in the men’s light (57-63kg) category after failing to make the gold medal bout.

Cuba’s Andy Cruz comfortably won their semi-final match-up, with all five judges awarding him victory in each of the three rounds. Cruz will take on the USA’s Keyshawn Davis in Sunday’s gold medal fight.

Australia's last Olympic boxing medal was Grahame Cheney's silver in the light-welterweight category at the 1988 Seoul Games.

CANOE SPRINT: AUSSIE FOURS INTO SEMI-FINALS, CARRINGTON GOES FOR MEDAL NUMBER FOUR

Both the men’s and women’s K4 500m canoe sprint boats are through to Saturday’s semi-finals.

The men’s crew of Lachlan Tame, Riley Fitzsimmons, Murray Stewart and Jordan Wood finished second in their heat to earn automatic progression to the semis, while women Jaime Roberts, Jo Brigden-Jones, Shannon Reynolds and Catherine McArthur had to go via the quarter-final where they finished fifth to make their way into the next round.

New Zealand's newly most successful Olympian Lisa Carrington is also through to the semis with her crewmates, finishing second in their heat to skip the quarter-final. If New Zealand make the podium in the K4, it will be Carrington’s fourth medal at the Tokyo Games and the seventh of her Olympic career.

RACE WALK: 50KM NEWBIE WINS GOLD, EIGHTH AND A PB FOR AUSSIE

Australia’s Rhydian Cowley finished eighth in the men’s 50km walk, just a fraction of a second behind the walkers in sixth and seventh, with a personal best time of 3:52:01.

Poland’s Dawid Tomala won gold, storming into the lead after the 30km mark and holding a pace no one was able to catch. He finished 36 seconds ahead of German silver medallist Jonathan Hilbert, with a time of 3:50:08.

Tomala only began competing in the 50km distance this year, his first race in March where he recorded the time that qualified him into the Tokyo Games. Previously, he had only competed over the 20km distance. He will undoubtedly be pleased he made the switch.

GOLF: AUSSIE INTO THIRD

Australia’s Hannah Green is tied for third after round three of the women’s golf tournament, 10 under par with a total score of 203. The USA’s Nelly Korda is clearly leading the competition, her score of 198 (15 under par) three strokes clear of India’s Aditi Ashok in second.

Other Aussie Minjee Lee is sitting back in equal 34th, one under par with her score of 212.
