MRO bans Greene for two as Giants immediately challenge, Selwood escapes with a fine

2021-08-07T20:00+10:00

GWS star Toby Greene has again fallen foul of the MRO, this time copping a two-week ban for a stray elbow to the throat of Patrick Dangerfield.

Match Review officer Michael Christian deemed the incident to be careless, high contact and high impact - resulting in the two match ban for the Giant.

The Giants have already expressed a desire to challenge the decision, with Bailey Fritsch’s precedent earlier this year something they may look to reference.

“We firmly believe this was a football action and doesn't warrant a suspension," Giants football boss Jason McCartney said in a club statement.

"As such, we will challenege the intial ruling at the tribunal."

Fritsch was given a week by the MRO but it was later overturned after Melbourne challenged the decision at the tribunal.

The writing was on the wall for Greene after Dangerfield left the ground to head to hospital for checks on what turned out to be a bruised laryngeal.

In other MRO news, Geelong skipper Joel Selwood escaped with a fine after collecting GWS young gun Sam Taylor high with a bump.

Selwood ran past the footy and collected the Giants defender high as he attempted to pick up the footy.

Selwood’s incident was graded as careless, high contact and low impact - allowing him to escape with a slap on the wrist.

If the collision was graded as medium impact then the Cats veteran would have been rubbed out for a week.
