Is sledging good or bad for the game?

2021-08-09T09:10+10:00

Cronulla centre Will Chambers has caught the attention of the rugby league community for again sledging his opponents.

After verbally attacking Dylan Walker in last week’s clash with Manly, Chambers was again in the thick of things on Saturday as he targeted Warriors forward Kane Evans.

With Evans responding to the words with his fists and ultimately getting sin-binned, Warriors coach Nathan Brown said post-match Chambers was “a little bit smarter than us on that”.

Considering the divisive nature of the issue and its obvious benefits when an opposition player is sent off, SEN host Andrew Voss asked whether sledging is good or bad for the game.

“Here is a talking point from the weekend, Will Chambers has come under fire from his coach and New Zealand officials for personal sledging of Kane Evans,” Voss said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.

“I’ve got to say, Will Chambers I thought couldn’t get any more animated than he did the previous week where he went on for two or three minutes sledging with his team down a bucket load of points.

“But on Saturday, he’s gone again and he’s claimed a victory.

“Kane Evans had only been on for a couple of minutes, and he lost his you know what.

“On a hit up, makes a mistake, Chambers comes in, gives him a verbal, Kane then throws two clench fist palms and gets sin-binned, and then latter got sin-binned again.

“So, I ask the question, and I know we’ve had the debate before, but sledging; good or bad for the game?

“Is what Will Chambers did wrong? Is it not in the spirit of the game? Or is he smart?

“Warriors coach Nathan Brown said after the game, ‘He was a little smarter than us on that’, whereas others have said, ‘He has crossed the line, he’s gone too far’.

“Let’s have closure on the debate, is it good or bad?

“Will Chambers right now has claimed his capture with Kane Evans the other day.

“He’s a dill for what he did, but talk about reeled in.”
