Where retiring veteran believes Carlton needs to improve

2021-08-11T19:33+10:00

Marc Murphy will play his 300th and final game for Carlton against Port Adelaide on Saturday, ending what’s been a glittering career in the navy blue.

But as he prepares to hang the boots up, the club will this week table the findings of an external review which is expected to decide the fate of several key figures, following a disappointing season on the field.

Murphy, who has been at the club since 2006, still maintains the Blues are on the right trajectory despite sitting in 13th spot on the ladder.

The 34-year-old conceded that the club’s depth is an issue at the moment, saying a successful side needed over 30 players to “pitch in” and contribute, something that he said may not currently be happening.

“I certainly believe we’re not far off it,” he said on Sportday.

“The last two years we would’ve loved to play a lot better and I know we have the ability to win more games of football.

“I know the boys are working really hard to work out what that is, as there’s so much talent there and so many guys playing at a really high level.

“When you’re relying on 22 players on the weekend and then landing up having 30-35 on a list that you require throughout the season, you need weight of numbers.

“We’re probably not seeing that at the moment to be honest. It’s a team sport and you require lots of blokes that need to pitch in and play at a really high standard, to be honest we’re trying to work out what makes blokes tick.

“Consistency is key and the boys are trying to find that at the moment and I don’t think things are too far away from clicking."
