Tigers face tough call on premiership defender

2021-08-15T11:50+10:00

Richmond faces a tough list management call on triple premiership defender Bachar Houli.

The 33-year-old is without a contract for next year, but wants to play on in 2022.

A calf complaint interrupted Houli’s start to the year, before a syndesmosis injury against Gold Coast in Round 16 prematurely ended his season.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick didn’t give much away when asked about Houli’s future after Friday night's loss to GWS.

“From a list management point of view, we’ll work our way through that,” Hardwick told reporters.

“We don’t discuss those things in the media, so we’ll sit down with Bachar and figure out what that looks like moving forward.”

Former Richmond forward Nathan Brown thinks Houli still has a role to play at Punt Road next season.

“Bachar Houli’s looking for a new contract at the moment – and I’d give him one,” Brown told Channel Nine’s Sunday Footy Show.

“I think they’ve missed him, his calming influence in that back end.

“I think he plays on.”

Houli has 232 AFL games with Richmond and Essendon since debuting in 2007.

Since joining the Tigers for the 2011 season, the dashing defender has been a mainstay down back, playing 206 matches.
