“Horrific tactics” cost England second Test against India says Warne

India’s tail-order batting proved the hero as they pulled off a big Test win over England at Lord’s.

Needing to build a lead in the second innings overnight, it was Mohammed Shami (56 off 70) and Jasprit Bumrah (34 off 64) that put India in a strong position and allowed them to declare 298/8.

India then quickly dismissed the England top order, with openers Rory Burns and Dom Sibley both dismissed for ducks.

Joe Root (33) and Jos Buttler (25) were the only batsmen who offered any resistance as they were bowled out for 120 with India winning by 151 runs.

KL Rahul was named the man of the match for his first-innings 129 off 250 runs.

Australian cricketing great Shane Warne blames England’s bowling tactics for their inability to dismiss the Indian tail-order.

“I thought it was a fantastic Test match and a fantastic advert for Test cricket,” he said on SENZ Breakfast with Baz & Izzy.

“The England team turned up today thinking we’ll knock over (Rishabh) Pant, we’ll win this and chase down 180 or something.

“And now they’re standing there scratching their heads saying what went wrong and what went wrong was horrific tactics.

“They had five, six, seven fielders on the fence. The bowler is standing at the top of his mark looking around saying how am I going to get some of these guys out?

“They got a bit too emotional, a bit too much short stuff and in the end the best team won at that was India.”

India now leads the series 1-0 after the first Test ended in a draw. The Third Test takes place at Leeds on the 25th of August.
