SENZ Spotlight: Angela Cullen

2021-08-17T05:37+10:00

She's just blown out 47 candles, is married, has two kids, grew up on Auckland's North Shore... and has one of the biggest sporting jobs in the world.

Angela Cullen is the trainer, performance coach, assistant and physiotherapist for acclaimed Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton. A job she's held for the last five years.

She also takes care of the daily life of Hamilton as his physio-slash-PA. She also makes sure he's in peak state of mind for racing for Mercedes, tailoring his diet for maximum nutrition and planning their daily run – all done in her laidback, New Zealand way.

Angela and Lewis also share matching tattoos - the word ‘loyalty’ inked on each of their wrists. You'd have to wonder if Angela's job perks include a Mercedes.

Angela Cullen trained at AUT in Auckland through the early 90s, gaining a health science degree before heading off on the standard OE to London.

She was a senior physio at the English Institute of Sport helping train the British Olympic sprinters, cyclists and triathletes. She started working for Hamilton in 2016 after he’d heard about her skills.

Hamilton, who earns around $80 million a year driving race cars, recently told media that the kiwi was one of the hardest working women in the world and “one of the greatest things that have happened in my life.”

Cullen returned home to New Zealand in her late 20s to work for High Performance New Zealand but now lives in Switzerland with her cycling coach husband and children, as she continues to work for one of the best F1 drivers in the world.
