The two off-the-ball incidents Lyon “hated” seeing

Two off-the-ball incidents caught Garry Lyon’s attention on the weekend.

West Coast midfielder Dom Sheed could come under scrutiny from the Match Review Officer for an open-handed hit to the stomach of Fremantle’s Bailey Banfield.

The incident occurred during the second quarter of Sunday’s pulsating Western Derby at Optus Stadium.

Lyon thinks off-the-ball incidents like Sheed’s should automatically equate to a one-match suspension.

“I hate those little sneaky gut punches. I’ve always been happy for them to be given a week,” Lyon told SEN Breakfast.

“I know that would be over the top, but it’s the only way you’re going to stamp them out.”

Lyon and Tim Watson also didn’t like Richmond defender Dylan Grimes’ elbow to the back of GWS forward Harry Himmelberg.

Watson asked: “What about the Dylan Grimes one on Himmelberg on Friday night?”

Lyon: “Hated it.

“If you’re the forward standing in front of a backman…”

Watson: “You don’t deserve that, do you?”

Lyon: “Yeah. Then everyone jumped up in arms saying it was a ridiculous free kick – no it’s not.

“It’s a free kick.”

Watson: “I’m with you on that.

“It might have been lightish, but at the same time it was unnecessary.”

Nick Riewoldt called out Grimes’ “cheap” act that resulted in a free kick and goal to Himmelberg.
