Why Patrick Dangerfield denied GWS' Appeals Board request

2021-08-18T14:48+10:00

Patrick Dangerfield has explained why he opted not to assist Toby Greene and GWS at the AFL Appeals Board.

Greene was ultimately suspended for one game for an elbow to the throat of Dangerfield, that forced the Cats star to be substituted out of the game and taken to hospital.

Fox Footy reported last week that the Giants inquired with Geelong as to whether they could borrow him for the hearing to help get Greene off, but the Cats and the AFLPA President declined.

Dangerfield gave his side of the story.

“To be honest it had been a long enough week as it already was and I felt like I’d contributed enough at the start of the week and then back-end of the week I had a few different board meetings with the AFL,” he told SEN’s Whateley.

“I wasn’t going to move around my scheduling and where training was at.

“I felt they had enough and then obviously a few leaks go out through the media, but different clubs operate differently it’s not something we do.

“I was focused on the game at hand for us.”

The Fox Footy report indicated that the Giants internally feel Geelong’s denial was part of a ‘simmering feud’ that has lingered since the 2020 trade period and the Jeremy Cameron saga.

The Giants played hard ball in negotiations for 10 days after forcing the restricted free agent to be traded. The deal ultimately involved three first-round picks.
