"I feel for him": Leppitsch laments Carlton's lack of support for Teague

2021-08-21T12:10+10:00

Justin Leppitsch says he feels sympathy for Carlton coach David Teague as he prepares to learn whether he’ll be at club in 2022.

Having lived a similar experience after being sacked as Brisbane coach at the end of 2016, Leppitsch said he could feel the lack of support for him diminish as the season drew to a close.

Teague said publicly on Thursday that he would’ve liked more support from the Blues hierarchy in previous weeks, with Leppitsch expressing sympathy with his current situation.

“It’s always difficult to talk about these things for me because I’ve lived a similar type of thing,” he said on SEN’s Crunch Time.

“You think a few weeks out emotionally that the decision has been made, but it just doesn’t come until a few weeks later. I remember having a win in that period of time and that same people that used to come up and pat you on the back after a win just aren’t there.

“You sense and feel the lack of support around you so I feel for David (Teague). You feel like you are walking the plank a little bit.

“I was probably the last person to know a lot of the time, things were happening regularly (in the last weeks when I was Brisbane coach) and a similar thing seems to be happening to David.

“We don’t know what’s happening in the background, I hope they’re being more transparent with him and his management than they are publicly. I feel for him.”

Carlton will play its final game of the regular season against GWS on Saturday night, with the findings of the club’s review to be made public in the coming days.
