Lyon calls out “lacklustre” Freo performance in must-win game

2021-08-23T07:39+10:00

With their season on the line and a shot at finishing eighth still up for grabs, Fremantle were blown off the park by St Kilda in Tasmania.

The Dockers went down by 58 points, conceding 11 second-half goals and only kicking three of their own.

Even though Essendon would go on to win later on Sunday and close the door on their finals chances, Freo was still alive at the time and were never in the game against a Saints team with nothing to play for.

Garry Lyon couldn’t believe the lack of fight from a team with a finals chance in front of them.

“The Fremantle Football Club needs to pull their socks up,” Lyon told SEN Breakfast.

“That lacklustre, mealy-mouthed performance against St Kilda on the weekend when they still had a chance of playing finals.”

Tim Watson stepped in to defend the Dockers, suggesting they were simply out of petrol tickets after a tough season on and off the field.

“I think they gave all they had to give last week against the Eagles,” Watson said.

“Sometimes your tank just runs dry.

“I just don’t think they had it in them. They were exhausted.

“I think they’ve had a very good year. They’ve surprised me with how they’ve gone this year.”

Lyon however added: “I’m not saying they had to win, I’m saying they had to give better effort.”
