“The right home” for out of favour Giants star

2021-08-23T08:25+10:00

Kane Cornes has proposed a trade between Fremantle and GWS that could solve headaches at both clubs.

Giants midfielder Stephen Coniglio has had a stark drop-off in performance since signing a seven-year deal worth reportedly $1 million per season and taking over as captain at the end of 2019.

The 27-year-old has only played five games this season and dealt with injuries. He was named the medical sub for the Round 23 clash with Carlton.

Freo meanwhile look likely to lose young midfielder Adam Cerra in the trade period, with the 21-year-old reportedly looking to come home to Victoria.

Cornes believes Coniglio, who was drafted out of Swan Districts in WA, could take Cerra’s place in the Fremantle midfield and the Giants can move on with Toby Greene as captain.

“(Stephen Coniglio is) in a really awkward position. It’s just one of the biggest falls in form that you can remember,” Cornes told SEN Breakfast.

“I think he ends up at Fremantle, doesn’t he?

“If Fremantle loses Cerra, you could argue that the right home for Coniglio for both clubs is at Fremantle.

“Get GWS to pay a large part of the salary for that, it removes the awkwardness, Toby Greene is your immediate captain, it solves a lot of problems for the Giants.

“You can’t play him (Coniglio, in this Elimination Final), can you? He’s probably the medical sub again.”

GWS is preparing for an Elimination Final clash with Sydney in Launceston this weekend.
