Stanton the latest victim of Carlton’s football department review

2021-08-23T16:03+10:00

Brent Stanton is the latest victim of Carlton’s football department review.

On a day of drama at Ikon Park, the Blues cancelled an all-of-club meeting that was expected to shine some light on the findings of the football department review nearly two months in the making.

But with key staff still uncertain on what their future holds, it’s understood assistant coach Stanton sought clarity and was informed he would not be continuing next year.

Stanton will depart following the sudden resignation of fellow assistant John Barker, who left the club in June.

Barker had the blessing of coach David Teague and football manager Brad Lloyd to coach out the season before leaving, but Barker’s departure was fast-tracked by management.

Stanton joined the Blues in a development role at the end of 2017 after retiring from Essendon having played 255 games from 2004-2017.

He was responsible for midfield and transition under Teague in 2021.

Despite widespread media reports that new president Luke Sayers would today bring down the axe, he used a letter to members to say “any outcomes or decisions will be made on the timeframe that is in the best interest of the club, not external expectations or pressure.”

But there were still key meetings at the club today involving Sayers, Teague and chief executive Cain Liddle.

A besieged Teague said at the weekend “it doesn’t look like it’s going in my favour”, with Alastair Clarkson or Ross Lyon set to take over if he is sacked with a year remaining on his contract.

Football boss Lloyd and assistants Cameron Bruce and Dale Amos are also under pressure.
