The phone call David Teague should make if he and the Blues part ways

2021-08-23T10:03+10:00

What should David Teague’s first move be if/when Carlton makes the call to move on from the senior coach?

Garry Lyon believes Teague should get on the phone to former Brisbane coach Justin Leppitsch, who faced similar circumstances at the end of his tenure.

Leppitsch was sacked after three years at the helm, despite, like the Blues coach, having one-year to run on his deal.

He went on to be a key part of Richmond’s coaching staff across their three premierships.

“I’d pick up the phone and call Justin Leppitsch. That would be a good start,” Lyon told SEN Breakfast.

“I don’t know whether they’ve got a relationship those two, but the coaching fraternity and the brotherhood is really strong.

“I heard Leppitsch talk on Crunch Time on the weekend and he went through the same thing.

“He was up there at a footy club in Brisbane where it didn’t work and where he didn’t think he had the support, the same sort of thing David Teague is going through.

“He walked away and had lost his love for the game and felt a bit bitter about it all, which you would, and he said even at his first year at Richmond when he helped coached them to a premiership, he said he still felt a touch of disconnection, but over time you mellow and get a better understanding of it.

“Now he seems in a really good headspace. So that would be a good start.”

With the season complete, the Blues are expected to make a call on Teague in the coming days.

Carlton President Luke Sayers released a statement on the situation on Monday morning.

“With our AFL season complete, our club is now in a position to fully brief the senior leaders of the Football Department on the review findings. This process will commence this week and will involve consultation between the Board and football department regarding the recommendations provided,” Sayers told the club’s website.

“The Club will take the necessary time required to absorb this review and any outcomes or decisions will be made on the timeframe that is in the best interest of the Club, not based on external expectations or pressure.

“As always, I remain committed to continue being open and transparent with our members and supporters regarding any outcomes and decisions that will arise out of this review, including the summarised findings, and as such, once this process is complete, our members will be the first to know.”
