Collingwood provides trade updates on Maynard, Cox, Weideman and more

2021-08-27T07:45+10:00

Collingwood football boss Graham Wright has given the latest on the futures of Brayden Maynard and Mason Cox.

Maynard, who is contracted for 2022, has been linked with the Adelaide Crows while Cox is without a contract for next year.

Wright was also asked about out-of-contract Melbourne forward Sam Weideman and the type of players the club will target in the trade period and the draft.

See Wright’s updates below:

Brayden Maynard

“Brayden and his management have shown no signs of him wanting to go anywhere,” Wright told Sportsday.

“I spoke to his manager a couple of days ago and there’s no sign of that.

“From our perspective, I think he’s really entrenched at the club, he’s a leader of the club, he’s contracted.

“You’ll always hear speculation about certain players along the way, and sometimes where there’s smoke there’s fire, but I don’t think there is in this case.”

Mason Cox

“We had a good conversation probably 10 days ago … just to say that we weren’t in a position to offer him a contract right now.

“But that doesn’t mean that we won’t.

“We’re waiting until we appoint a senior coach and then that coach having a say and having a look at where it sits from our entire list to be honest.

“At this stage, we haven’t delisted any players.

Sam Weideman

“He’s an out-of-contract player … you’re interested in anyone who’s out of contract that can help your football club.

“He’s a talented young forward.”

“At the moment, he’s probably behind two or three that are performing well in a team at the top of the ladder.”

Trade period plans

“When you finish 17th, you’re after a fair bit.

“No doubt from our perspective we had a lot of experience go out of the club – up to 1300 games, so our underbelly was a lot of inexperienced players.

“If we had injuries, it was always going to leave us a little bit exposed, which it did.

“We’d like another midfielder, we’d like a couple of small forwards and potentially a couple of key forwards, so we’ve got a lot of spots that we would like to potentially fill.

“We’ll have to be smart with our decision making and see what we can land through the trade period, but also through the draft.”
