Five Demons, 11 first-timers in All-Australian team

The 2021 All-Australian team was unveiled on Thursday night, with five players from minor premiers Melbourne selected.

Demons quintet Max Gawn, who was named captain of the side, Steven May, Jake Lever, Clayton Oliver and Christian Petracca were all included in the final 22.

It’s Gawn’s fifth All-Australian gong while May and Lever were two of 11 first-time All-Australians alongside Port Adelaide’s Ollie Wines and Aliir Aliir, Carlton’s Sam Walsh and Harry McKay, the Western Bulldogs’ Bailey Dale, Essendon’s Darcy Parish, Sydney’s Tom Papley, Gold Coast’s Touk Miller and Brisbane’s Daniel Rich.

Carlton defender Jacob Weitering, Essendon ace Jake Stringer and Brisbane captain Dayne Zorko were unlucky omissions.

Melbourne tall Luke Jackson won the Rising Star award, while star midfielder Oliver claimed the AFL Coaches Association Champion Player award.
