Why Geelong should look to move on gun midfielder if they make an early finals exit

2021-08-28T12:05+10:00

Kane Cornes says Geelong should consider launching a “soft rebuild” and move on someone like Cam Guthrie if they lose in week two of the finals.

The Cats were heavily beaten by the Power on Friday night and now face a cutthroat semi final against either Sydney or GWS next weekend.

Cornes wondered whether Geelong would look to reassess their list build if they crashed out of the finals early, especially considering their recent recruitment of veterans such as Isaac Smith and Shaun Higgins.

He threw up Cam Guthrie – who is currently unsigned beyond this season and is an unrestricted free agent - as someone the Cats could look to move on opted if they wanted another top draft pick.

“If they were to go out in straight sets, they have a player like Cam Guthrie who is out of contract right now,” he said on SEN’s Crunch Time.

“We all love Guthrie, he’s been such a consistent player. But he’s 29 and wants a four-year deal on big money, do they start a soft rebuild where they let Guthrie go to get a compensation pick in and start to do those type of things.

“If you win and go to another Grand Final, then you probably go ahead and sign up Cam Guthrie, but they don’t have a lot of options because of the (Jeremy Cameron) trade.”

Geelong currently doesn’t have a first round pick in this year’s draft, with their first selection currently at pick 30.
