Carlton legend disappointed with decision to sack Teague

2021-09-01T10:51+10:00

Carlton great Alex Jesaulenko has hit out at his former club, declaring more of the responsibility should be on the players.

After promoting their finals expectations earlier this year, the Blues failed to live up to the hype, finishing 13th with only eight wins for the season.

The poor season culminated in coach David Teague’s sacking amid a messy external review, and Jesaulenko believes the club hasn’t found the right solution.

“I still think they’re going about it the wrong way,” he said on SEN's Bob and Andy.

“Everyone blames the coach, but it’s not the coach, it’s the players.

“The players themselves need to be kicked up the backside.”

The four-time premiership player believes Carlton’s list has the talent to take it to the next level, but seem to be unable to consistently showcase it together.

The Blues have many high draft picks on their list, however have often struggled for consistency throughout their short careers.

“They can play, of course they can play,” Jesaulenko said.

“(The players) put in good games and bad games, but (the team) doesn’t win.”

The club is currently searching for their next senior coach, with new president Luke Sayers already declaring an intent to play finals in 2022.
