Ex-Blue says Lyon would be a “terrific appointment” for Carlton

Ross Lyon would a “terrific appointment” for Carlton as his style of coaching appears a “natural fit”, according to former Blues forward Aaron Hamill.

Carlton president Luke Sayers contacted Lyon late last week as the Blues began their search for a new senior coach following the sacking of David Teague.

“What I can tell you is I did have a conversation with Ross last night. A general conversation for about 45 minutes,” Sayers told SEN Breakfast last Friday.

“Ross is excited to put his hat in the ring once we figure out whatever is the process to move forward at the Carlton footy club.”

Hamill, who worked under Lyon as a player at the Saints and Blues, is a big fan of the former Fremantle and St Kilda coach.

“I’ve followed Ross’ journey from afar. I was fortunate enough to play under him at Carlton in the early days,” Hamill told Sportsday.

“Under David Parkin there was John Worsfold and Ross Lyon and clearly from there you could see that those two gentlemen were going to go on and do bigger and better things. My last year (as a player) was Ross’ first year in 2007.

“If you look at Carlton and you look at where they’re at and you look what Ross is about, it seems a natural fit.

“I’m sure if he puts his hand up, which I’m led to believe he has, you know what you’re going to get with Ross – high accountability, high standards, full of nous and a really capable person across all sectors.

“I think that would be a terrific appointment.”

After parting ways with the Saints in late August, Hamill has held “loose discussions” with two clubs over potential coaching roles.
