Carlton urged to "test the waters" on left-field coaching candidate

2021-09-02T14:34+10:00

Matt Rendell has floated the possibility of Carlton looking at current Essendon assistant coach Daniel Giansiracusa to fill their vacant senior coaching position.

The Age revealed on Thursday afternoon that Ross Lyon had pulled out of the Blues coaching race, after he said on Footy Classified on Wednesday night that he personally called president Luke Sayers to seek clarity on the process.

Giansiracusa joined the Bombers as an assistant coach ahead of the 2021 season, after a coaching stint at Western Bulldogs following the conclusion of his 265-game playing career.

While the likes of Richmond assistant Adam Kingsley and former North Melbourne coach Brad Scott now expected to be frontrunners for the job, Rendell urged Carlton to “test the waters” with Giansiracusa.

"They just have to go through the process," he said on SEN’s Dwayne World.

"Like Collingwood, it seems like you go through a Hawthorn or Richmond (coaching group) in the last couple of years … if you get someone out of there you always seem to get someone good.

"I’d be following that path, Adam Kingsley is one that missed out on the Collingwood job and I think he would be in the mix.

"I’m hearing good reports about (Daniel) Giansiracusa and how he interviewed in another job. I’d be testing the waters with him as well."

Luke Sayers has stated he is after an experienced coach to take over after the club parted ways with David Teague last month.
