Matthew Pavlich wants to see the AFL Grand Final go on the road every two years.
The Fremantle great understands the AFL’s deal with the Victorian Government for the MCG to be the host venue, but would still love the game’s flagship event to be rotated between the other states.
This year will mark the second time the Grand Final is played outside of Melbourne due to COVID reasons, with Perth’s Optus Stadium to host after Brisbane’s Gabba housed Richmond’s win over Geelong last year.
Pavlich says the buzz around Perth is growing ahead of September 25 and would be open to seeing other Australian cities experience the same thing.
“The vibe is already humming, you can sense it everywhere you go,” he said on Sportsday.
“People are talking about it, it’s incredibly exciting for people over here in Western Australia.
“I get the fact that the Victorian Government and the AFL have done a deal, I know it’s a long-term deal, but I’m an advocate of taking the AFL Grand Final on a tour anyway.
“Bringing it to stadiums like Optus Stadium, Adelaide Oval, taking it to the SCG, the Gabba - we saw that happen last year - I know it’s unlikely and I know all the reasons commercially and economically why the AFL have done the deal, but I love the idea.
“Like they do in the Super Bowl. Yes, we’re different to America, I know that, but taking it on tour has got some real opportunity. Maybe every second year it goes away from the MCG.
“The build up here is going to be enormous and it’s only going to get greater after we know who the two teams are playing come Saturday night.”
Melbourne and Geelong clash at Optus Stadium in the first Preliminary Final on Friday night before Port Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs do battle at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday night.
The two winners will then meet in the first Grand Final in Western Australia after a weekend off.
