"Inexcusable way to do business": Carlton slammed following CEO's departure

2021-09-11T12:18+10:00

Gerard Whateley says the way Carlton has handled the departures of both coach David Teague and CEO Cain Liddle is inexcusable.

Following Teague’s sacking last month, the Blues announced on Friday that Liddle would also leave the club after he sought clarity on his position moving forward.

Whateley said there is no excuses for how Carlton has treated both Teague and Liddle, saying they both deserved better in the days leading to their respective exits.

“For whatever ends up being there (following the club-wide review), there’s no excusing what’s taken place around David Teague and now Cain Liddle,” he said on SEN’s Crunch Time.

“Cain Liddle is sitting there at the press conference where the details of the report are being unveiled and the coach is being sacked, he’s then appointed to select the new coach and within 15 days, he’s gone.

“It’s an inexcusable way to do business. If Luke Sayers gets what he wants and it’s Brian Cook (as the new CEO) and if they do land Alastair Clarkson (as coach), good luck to them, but it still won’t excuse what has happened during this phase.”

SEN Chief Sports Reporter Sam Edmund says despite Clarkson’s manager James Henderson saying his client is intent to take a year off football after his long-term stint at Hawthorn, there are still people internally at the Blues who think he’s a chance to coach in 2022.

“The whispers rage on around Alastair Clarkson and he may still be in the mix,” Edmund said.

“I cannot tell you how many times I’ve had that denied by his manager James Henderson, who stresses nothing has changed.

“But speaking to people who are employed at Carlton, they still believe they’re a chance to land the four-time premiership coach.”
