Carlton legend approached Brisbane coach as search continues

2021-09-14T07:30+10:00

Carlton’s search for both a head coach and a new CEO is getting no easier with suggestions that the sub-committee tasked with the job is not exactly on the same page.

That is the opinion of Caroline Wilson who is of the belief that legendary three-time premiership coach David Parkin, who is on that sub-committee, approached Brisbane Lions coach Chris Fagan about the vacancy.

It comes after Sam McClure reported on Sportsday that the Blues could be poised to launch a “red hot” crack at Geelong coach Chris Scott.

Coaching hunt aside, there remains a gaping hole at Ikon Park in the form of a CEO after Cain Liddle and the club parted ways last week, with outgoing Cats chief Brian Cook a possible replacement.

Throw into the mix that club champion Greg Williams now has a full-time executive role having been a director and it is quite a situation, as Wilson explained on Channel 9’s Footy Classified.

“I think the other hint to Cain Liddle leaving was the fact they offered his job to Brian Cook two weeks earlier,” Wilson said.

“We think now that that possibility is growing more of a probability by the day. We’re told that Brad Lloyd is staying as the head of the football department.

“It’s extraordinary to me that Greg Williams now seems to be an executive director, working at the club full-time and helping to choose the coach.

“I can also reveal that David Parkin, who sits on the coaching sub-committee, approached Chris Fagan not so long ago about the possibility of him coming to the club and being senior coach.

“Chris Fagan knocked that on the head immediately.

“You just wonder who is making the decisions at the Carlton Football Club.”

Adding to this, Craig Hutchison believes that things are a “mess” at the Blues and the way they operate must change if Cook agrees to take on the job.

“That’s a mess,” he said.

“The sub-committee is just not working. There are people having fireside chats left, right and centre.

“One of the six sub-committee is already gone. Greg Williams is on the board but he’s paid, but he’s coming to work, does Brad work for the vacant CEO or does he work for Greg?

“I don’t like it at all. If Brian Cook goes in he has to be given the keys and appoint the coach himself because this is a mess at the moment and it just continues to get worse and worse.”

Port Adelaide assistant Michael Voss has also been linked with the Carlton coaching role, explaining that he has “had a discussion with them” but it “hasn’t progressed anywhere”.

The search for David Teague’s replacement continues.
