John Worsfold has outlined what he wants to see from Carlton as the club’s search for a new coach continues.
Worsfold acted as a coaching consultant for David Teague during the 2021 season, taking on the role from afar having moved back to Perth after his time at Essendon finished in 2020.
Following the sacking of Teague and the current hunt for a replacement, Worsfold has commented on the situation at the Blues as he sees it and what he expects from the club’s next coach and current management.
“I really just hope, not only in terms of their selection process for the new coach, but their roadmap for the next five or six years needs to be really clear,” he said on SEN WA’s Gilly & Goss.
“So whoever takes that job knows what he’s coming in to work with and the timeframes they’re looking at.
“There’s a lot of hard work still to do.
“They’ve got to really be clear on that pathway. It’s hard to put timelines on it, but they’re going to have to really back in the new coach to build on the stuff they’ve already done and take it to the next level.
“Then whoever takes the job, probably more importantly, is that they’re on the same page as the board and the management of the team to work really closely together.”
The West Coast premiership player and coach also likes what he sees from some of the club’s talented youngsters, in particular the forward duo of Charlie Curnow and Harry McKay.
“I believe they’ve got a really talented list that could grow really quickly,” he said.
“As they start to get Charlie Curnow back to playing his best footy and then working in tandem with Harry McKay, they do have some good talent, but those guys haven’t been out on the park together.”
