Leppitsch backs Daisy Pearce to become first female AFL coach

2021-09-14T17:35+10:00

New Collingwood assistant coach Justin Leppitsch believes Daisy Pearce can “change the face of footy” by becoming the first female AFL coach in the near future.

Pearce is the current captain of Melbourne in the AFLW and has a number of media commitments, regularly appearing on SEN Breakfast and Whateley while also providing special comments for Channel 7.

She is the most recognised female involved in AFL broadcasts and Leppitsch believes she can one day make the transition to the coaching ranks.

“Yeah absolutely (I can imagine her as the first female coach in the AFL landscape),” he told SEN’s Whateley.

“I’ve loved working with Daisy.

“I’m looking forward to the day that she joins the coaching ranks in footy, I think she’s the one that will change the face of footy going forward.”

There are currently no female AFL coaches, but the former Brisbane great says there’s no reason Pearce can’t be the first, and he’d welcome her to Collingwood.

“There’s a lot more to coaching than just being an intelligent person, but yeah absolutely, there’s no reason that can’t happen,” he said.

“Hopefully Daisy may be in black and white in a few years, (I'll) try and get her to come to our footy club.”

Leppitsch was announced on Monday as one of two new assistant coaches to support Craig McRae at the Pies, Brendon Bolton also joining from Hawthorn.
