Suns appoint Richmond great as new football manager

2021-09-15T18:54+10:00

The Gold Coast Suns have appointed Wayne Campbell as the club’s new general manager of football performance, taking over Jon Haines’ former job.

The 48-year old held a similar role at the GWS Giants between 2016-2019 and also worked at the AFL as the league’s head of umpiring.

He’ll now join coach Stuart Dew in a bid to turn around the Suns’ poor on-field performance in recent years.

“It’s been a whirlwind, it’s only been seven days when (Gold Coast CEO) Mark Evans called,” Campbell told SEN’s Bob and Andy.

“I’m really passionate about footy and really passionate about the role.

“I’ve followed (the Suns) and I think they’re building something really special, I know from the outside people might have a different opinion of that but they’ve been able to build a really talented list, you can see they play for their coach and I think they’ve developed a really good culture.

“I think they’ve really laid the foundations of a good footy club.”

Campbell is a former Richmond best and fairest winner, playing 297 games for the club.
