Port Adelaide yesterday completed a medical test on GWS forward Jeremy Finlayson.
Contracted until the end of 2023, it has been reported that he is weighing up a move to South Australia for family reasons.
Power great Kane Cornes however cannot see why his old club would target a key forward, when they have three fighting for spots in their best 22 in Charlie Dixon, Todd Marshall, Mitch Georgiades as well as ruckmen Scott Lycett, Peter Ladhams and Sam Hayes.
“He’s really the last player that they need,” Cornes told SEN SA Breakfast.
“Port Adelaide does not need another inconsistent forward who goes missing in big games.
“That sounds harsh, but you’ve got Todd Marshall, you’ve got Mitch Georgiades, you’ve got Charlie Dixon.
“Unless you’re looking to play Jeremy Finlayson, who’s a good size, in the backline, which he has done sporadically throughout his career, I’m not sure why there is any level of interest.
“Maybe it’s a tick the box and with these things you can appear to be interested but you’re not actually that interested and you suit the management and you pretend to go down that road to take care of other areas of business, for example if that manager looks after other players you’re looking to get involved with.
“There are politics at play here. I can’t see why Port Adelaide would want Jeremy Finlayson. I honestly can’t.
“Unless, and every year you hear some murmurs about Charlie Dixon perhaps wanting to go back to Gold Coast. I have heard that … it seems to come up every year, he is contracted, I don’t know the level of accuracy to those reports.
“That would be the only reason to go after Finlayson, to replace Dixon. They don’t need a forward who’s not physical and who goes missing in big games and who hasn’t been able to hold down a spot in GWS’ forward line, who lost Jeremy Cameron.
“It doesn’t make any sense to me. I absolutely wouldn’t support them going down that road, I don’t think they need Finlayson at all.”
Port Adelaide has also been linked to Sydney defender Jordan Dawson, who has requested a trade home to South Australia.
