Cornes says Carlton coach is a “prime job”

2021-09-18T12:30+10:00

Kane Cornes believes the Carlton coaching position is one of the best opportunities to become a senior coach that he’s seen, describing the role as a “prime job.”

The Blues have been searching for a senior coach since sacking former mentor David Teague in late August, with multiple high-profile names reportedly turning down advances from the club in that time.

The Port Adelaide great says this is a position many coaches across the league should be keen on securing.

“If I was a coach and I had aspirations, you don’t get many opportunities, but I’d love to have a shot at (the) Carlton (job),” he told SEN Crunchtime.

Despite their reported off-field woes, Cornes is confident a new coach would be taking over a team set for finals success in the coming years.

“I’ve said the whole time, even with the mess it’s been in the last six weeks, it’s a great job to get. A Big Victorian club that’s been starved of success for a long time… This is a prime job,” he said.

“I just think Carlton are primed to win a final next year and get back on the map, provided they get a coach that comes in with a structure and team around them that can teach these players over a preseason the defensive mechanisms that are in line with the way modern teams like Melbourne and others defend the ground.”

Former Geelong executive Brian Cook was confirmed as Carlton’s new CEO on Friday, which is likely to ease concerns for potential coaches over the club’s handling of off-field issues.

Carlton’s coaching subcommittee is set to announce their new appointment in the weeks after the AFL Grand Final.
