“He fits the bill”: New home floated for Magpies tall

2021-09-22T15:07+10:00

Mason Cox’s future at Collingwood remains in limbo.

The 30-year-old is without a contract for next year and is waiting to see whether he is part of new Magpies coach Craig McRae’s plans for 2022.

Cox has made just 18 senior appearances over the last two years – 11 in 2020 and seven this year – and missed a portion of the 2021 season due to a larynx injury.

Former Carlton list boss Stephen Silvagni thinks the American will find a new home if he is not offered a new deal by Collingwood.

“Talls are just so in-demand, aren’t they? Particularly if you’re looking for a ruckman-forward,” Silvagni told AFL Trade Radio.

“I could see him being on someone’s list, not on a lot of money.

“He can pinch hit in the ruck, he can go forward, so I could see him sitting on someone’s list.”

AFL Media reporter Mitch Cleary asked Silvagni: “St Kilda has been one that’s raised for him, do you see that being an option?”

To which the Carlton great replied: “I could see it as an option. They had some issues with their ruckmen this year.

“When Paddy Ryder is playing, he is super, so they do need a back-up ruckman that might play a bit of VFL football, but you know is adequate at AFL level.

“I think he fits the bill.”

The 211cm ruck-forward has kicked 93 goals in 76 games for the Magpies.
