Stephen Silvagni questions Carlton's likely recruitment of Sydney free agent

2021-09-22T12:44+10:00

Former Carlton list manager Stephen Silvagni has questioned the Blues’ potential interest in restricted free agent George Hewett.

The 25-year-old played 21 games for Sydney this year, averaging just under 18 disposals and four marks.

While he’s expected to land at IKON Park once the free agency window opens on Friday week, Silvgani wonders whether he’s the type of player that Carlton really needs.

“It’s an interesting one,” Silvgani told AFL Trade Radio on the club’s interest in Hewett.

“Is he the type of the player that Carlton needs? I think they have players on the list that can do that role, but obviously they’re looking at someone who can play off half back and the tagging role.

“I think he’s a good player and may be in their best 23, but I think he’s the type of player that you can develop on your list."

Silvgani said that Hewett’s recruitment could have ramifications for veteran Ed Curnow, who recently re-signed with the club.

He said if Curnow couldn’t play as a tagger, he struggled to see where else he’d fit in at Carlton.

“The question is what happens with Ed Curnow now and where do they play him,” he said.

“It’s pretty much that inside tagging role, he’ll probably struggle at half forward when he’s there so it’s going to be an interesting mix.”

Curnow spent most of 2021 playing at half forward for the Blues.
