Do the Pies now have enough draft points for Nick Daicos?

2021-10-04T18:01+11:00

Veteran list managers Stephen Silvagni and Matt Rendell have crunched the numbers and confirmed that Collingwood now has enough draft points to match any bid for Nick Daicos.

The Pies and Suns swapped picks on Monday afternoon in a deal that will see Collingwood will give up their future second, third and fourth-round picks to Gold Coast in return for picks 22, 46, 58, 79, and a future fourth-rounder.

With father-son Daicos likely to be bid on in the first five picks in the AFL National Draft, Silvagni ran through the numbers that will now allow Collingwood to pick up the highly rated youngster.

“Their total points now with all their draft picks is well over 3000 points, so they've got enough points now for Nick Daicos, even if he gets bid on at pick one, they’ve got plenty of draft points because they get a 20% discount (for Daicos being a father-son selection),” Silvagni said on AFL Trade Radio’s The Late Trade.

“My understanding of what could possibly happen here now is this: I think Nick Daicos, there’s enough word going around that he won’t get selected at pick one, it might be at pick two which is 2500 points.

“They get a 20% discounted, so that’s 2000 points they require, they’ve got over 3000 points now which means they’ll have 1000 points spare.

Rendell also looked at possible scenarios that may unfold on draft night.

“They already had 1707 points, they’ve picked up 1346 (with the trade), so they now have 3053. If he gets bid on at pick one, they need 2400, but he’s not going pick one, I’m pretty sure Jason Horne-Francis (will),” he said.

“If he gets nominated at pick two, they need 2013 points, that gives them 1040 leftover.”

“If, as I suspect, he gets nominated at pick three, they need 1787 points, so they are going to have roughly 1300 leftover.

“So that pick 22 they’ve got (received from Gold Coast), they’re going to use it to trade for a player.”

North Melbourne has the first pick in the 2021 AFL National Draft, followed by the GWS Giants and Gold Coast.

The Pies will be relieved to secure the points needed early on in the trade period, which only opened on Monday morning.

In addition to Daicos, Collingwood are looking to land trade targets Patrick Lipinski and Nathan Kreuger.

The AFL National Draft will be held over two days on November 23 and 24.
